Standing on the large artificial bridge/terrace constructed by the Jesuits to connect the Cathedral with the huge Jesuit College, we get an excellent overview of the city. The tower on the left is part of the College and the church in the center is the Archdeacon's Church of St. Jacob, dating from the late 15th century. It has one 86 meter tower; the second tower was left unfinished because the undermined basement rock of the slope, at the end of which the building was constructed, did not provide the necessary stability.

For Day 1 dinner, we had reserved the famous barrel cellar of the Auerbachskeller. This is the student hangout of Goethe and is mentioned prominently in 'Faust'. Later, we would be taken through the door in the background, into the Walpurgiskuchen or Witches Kitchen for a 'rejuvenation ceremony'.
