Leaving Vienna, we drove west along the Danube valley, stopping in Melk to view the magnificent Benedictine abbey which has been freshly painted and gilded throughout. This is a model of the whole complex, of which we saw only a small portion.

The grand restoration project -- financed in part by the sale of the abbey's Gutenberg Bible to Harvard -- was completed in 1996. This ceiling fresco in the Marble Hall is by Paul Troger, 1731.
