Alaska Aviator ~ Eielson Air Force Base named in honour of him. "Carl Ben Eielson is considered the father of commercial aviation in Alaska. He followed in the flight paths of pilots such as James Mitchell (Fairbanks, 1913), [for which the Mitchell Expressway was named in honour of], and the Black Wolf Squadron (New York to Nome, via Fairbanks and other points) but initiated and sustained the first commercial aviation business in the territory. His first exhibition flights in 1923 when President Harding drove the golden spike marking the completion of the Alaska Railroad, and freight and passenger flights such as to the Stewart and Denhart mine on Caribou Creek and his execution of the first contract airmail flights (February 1924 Fairbanks to McGrath) firmly established air transportation in the minds and hearts of Alaskans...."
