At the top of a long, winding, narrow track in the Natal wilderness we found this typical example of an old colonial house. KwaZulu Natal is a hot and humid place and in a time and place where there was no electricity or air conditioning, houses had to be built to take advantage of the natural breezes. This house has a wide shaded verandah and many doors that can be opened to take advantage of the breezes.

We stopped at Tamakwa Lodge for their decadent, delicious Sunday high tea. When we were inside, a light rain began to fall and when we came out, this is what the roses in the garden looked like.
