The museum building was built 1884-9 by H. R. Yeoville Thomason. It is home to the world's largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite art (a nineteenth century English art movement which romanticised the European Middle Ages, and whose ideal was the more natural form of paiting the artists believed existed before the great Italian Renaissance artist Raphael). The clock tower of the of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is nicknamed 'Big Brum' because it is the Birmingham equivalent of London's 'Big Ben'!
