These are photos taken while I was living and working in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2002. Roll it, light it, then smoke it. Amsterdam is a hedonist's dream, with chill coffeeshops and breathtaking museums.

Utrecht carries Roman-origin credentials and was, in Medieval times, the only centre of importance in the northern Netherlands. Its history is shown in its attractive, atmospheric, well-preserved old centre.

I visited Nijmegen twice with my dear friends Saskia, Katje and Micha. Nijmegen was also one of the places my Uncle Paul visited in 2000 during a Round-European holiday before he passed away.

The gargantuan Grote Markt and St. Bavokerk are the city of Haarlem's stellar stops. Throughout this appealing city, fine architecture from the 17th and earlier centuries, both on grand and smaller scales, is in evidence.

A city filled with historic sites. When you wander on the street, you will easily find some buildings dated back to 17 or 18 century. It's cool and comfortable to live in this city.

Leiden has the timeless Dutch beauty that comes with canals, picturesque gables and a working windmill in the centre. Leiden University (Holland's oldest), numerous bookshops, and cafes give the town broad appeal.

At the "top" of Holland, Groningen has far-stretching fields, rows of poplars permanently bent by the winds off the shallow Waddenzee, and horizons marked by "mountains" of clouds.

Well-named, Zeeland is as much water as land, and much of what is land lies below sea level. The Zeelandbrug project brought a new public to beachblessed Zeeland.

Though not the country's capital, Den Haag is the seat of government for Holland and residence of H. M. Queen Beatrix. The city has much appeal for all ages and interests. The downtown decorum in Den Haag is contrasted at its coast (Scheveningen).

Delft's intimate old centre is dense with delicate impressions. Along stretches of its tranquil tree-shaded canals, the luminescence seems to have been supplied by the town's 17th century master painters.

Despite a history as lengthy as its neighbouring Dutch towns, Rotterdam has an entirely different appearance and personality, largely as a result of the levelling of its centre by the German "Luftwaffe" on the 14th May, 1940.

Gouda's lovely Grote Markt is one of the largest in Holland, and at its centre stands the Stadhuis, which may be the oldest gothic town hall in the Netherlands. Much of the centre of the canal-laced town has been designated an historic district.

Upon travelling to Drenthe, I chanced to see a hot-air balloon festival which was taking place in a nearby field. Drenthe is a lovely province, despite it being the least well-known of the country's twelve.

Edam's name is familiar for having originated the recipe for the region's most widely produced type of cheese. However, the wonderfully picturesque town merits much meandering to see its canals, drawbridges, grassy ramparts and many fine facades.

Eindhoven's development into a "company town" is largely due to the establishment in 1891 of a firm that produced electric light bulbs. Dr. Anton Philips founded the Philips company, now a world-recognised name in electronic products.

One of the famous things about the Netherlands are the windmills. The Dutch province of Brabant has a total of 127 mills (that I know of). The idea is to take pictures of all the mills. After much preparation, I now have all their coordinates in my GPS.
