Windmill the Hare, built in 1772 was used for milling corn for 160 years. From 1932, it was left to die. Restaured in 1985, it is in use ever since in Benthuizen; my nextdoor village. A proud, powerful and beautiful windmill.

Upon travelling to Drenthe, I chanced to see a hot-air balloon festival which was taking place in a nearby field. Drenthe is a lovely province, despite it being the least well-known of the country's twelve.

Edam's name is familiar for having originated the recipe for the region's most widely produced type of cheese. However, the wonderfully picturesque town merits much meandering to see its canals, drawbridges, grassy ramparts and many fine facades.
