PA - FORTIFIED VILLAGE: - Within a village (fortified or otherwise) there would normally consist buildings that were required for sleeping (Whare Puni), meeting (Whare Whakairo) and cooking (Whare Umu). Common materials used in the construction of such buildings were: - Toetoe, Raupo (Bulrush) and the Nikau Palm for roof thatching, Akeake and Manuka Bark for the roof lining and wooden slabs, batons, posts and pins of Totara or Manuka for the building frame, ridgepole and walls. Mutual help and co-operationm among the village community was a fundamental expression of kniship and human kindness and came into play when crops needed to be cultivated, food for large gatherings (Huihuinga) needed to be cooked.
