Often, even the most seemingly hostile landscapes on Earth have been inhabited by humankind for hundreds and thousands of years. The Karakoram Highway linked China to Pakistan in the 1980s, and one of the last villages it passes through is Passu, at the foot of some towering mountains and surrounded by constant glacial activity. The villagers practice subsistence agriculture but also grow delicious juicy apricots for trade.
