When you think of Peru, you think of Machu Picchu. Of course, it lives up to its reputation of a 'must-see' destination. There is more to Peru. I was very impressed by the colours of Peru and the endearing quality of their friendliness.

Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world. My advice is, if you end up there, don't try and hike it around in one day! Just for the record, the deepest canyon in the world, Cotahuasi, is Colca's next door neighbour.

We stopped at this pub to see how Inca beer is made and get some flavour of everyday life in the Peruvian countryside.

Barrie visited the Uros Islands on Lake Titicaca. The Uros are floating man-made reed mats anchored to the lake bottom. Islands of this kind have been here for many centuries pre-dating the Inca.

It is the Sacred Valley of the Incas but we discovered that it is also a beautiful mountain valley.
published by burnshuh
Barrie was given personal guided tours of an Inca agricultural experiment station at Moray and an Inca salt mine still in use at Maras.
published by burnshuh
In the midst of Urb. Brisas, we arrived at the studio of the celebrated fibre artist Maximo Laura, housed in a striking four storey building. Both the exterior and the interior are in stark contrast to the surrounding neighbourhood.
published by burnshuh
Maximo's striking tapestries combine complex abstract design, flowing images based on Peruvian cultural traditions, and rich and subtle colours and textures. We longed to buy one but were not sure we had a wall big enough to fit.
published by burnshuh
We had a two-hour guided tour of this museum devoted to the culture, archaeology and history of Peru. It was a crash course on the many cultures that pre-dated the first arrival of the Spaniards in 1532 and their conquest of the Incas.
published by burnshuh
This wonderful 18th century colonial house on busy Melgar street in the town centre was our hotel in Arequipa. It comprises a series of stone-walled buildings arranged around quiet courtyards and gardens. Barb's fibre workshops in Arequipa were held here.
published by burnshuh
Most cities and towns we visited in Peru had central town squares, a legacy of the Spanish colonial period. The four sides of Arequipa's central square are fronted by three elegant arcades and the Cathedral.
published by burnshuh
Barb also visited this convent on her day tour of Arequipa. Much smaller than Santa Catalina, it dates from the 18th century.
published by burnshuh
This rather unappealing city on the northwestern shore of Lake Titicaca was the starting point for Barrie's visit to Lake Titicaca. He stayed overnight here.
published by burnshuh
Barb did tapestry weaving with Alejandro Gallardo
published by burnshuh
The entire tour group made a three-day journey by bus to the Colca Valley and Colca Canyon, staying one night at Colca Lodge in the Valley and one night in the small town of Cabanaconde near the Canyon.
published by burnshuh
We stayed one night at this luxurious resort hotel on the Colca River.
published by burnshuh
On our second day in the Colca Valley we headed for our next overnight stop in the town of Cabanaconde near the deepest part of the Colca Canyon.
published by burnshuh
A small village in the Colca Valley where we stopped to visit the Spanish baroque church which had been severely damaged by the 2001 earthquake and a local history museum.
published by burnshuh
From Cabanaconde brave Barb joined other tour group members on a horseback tour closer to Colca Canyon (Barrie stayed behind). We stayed overnight in Cabanaconde.
published by burnshuh
On our way back to Arequipa we stopped briefly at Maca, another village along the south side of Colca Canyon. Maca was almost totally destroyed in an earthquake in 1991.
published by burnshuh
We made a stop at the highest point in our entire visit to Peru - Patapampa, altitude 4910 m (almost 15,000 ft.). At this height you move VERY slowly.
published by burnshuh
Maximo Laura and his staff led a workshop on colour selection and tapestry weaving techniques in Arequipa. Other participants did machine embroidery.
published by burnshuh
Barrie had a guided tour of the ruins of an Inca port at Puerto Nasca before setting off on the final leg of the journey to Nasca.
published by burnshuh
Barrie stayed overnight in Nasca and was given guided tours of various sites in the area, including a museum celebrating the work of Maria Reiche, who devoted the last 50 years of her life to discovering and measuring the Nasca lines.

Hostal Marani was our hotel in Cusco. Most of the rooms opened off the open-air central courtyard in which the textile worshops were held.
published by burnshuh
The main square of Cusco was a 15 minute walk from our hotel.
published by burnshuh
While we were in Cusco, one of the most important annual indigenous religious festivals in Peru was celebrated - the Day of the Dead. Street processions were a frequent occurence during the preceding week.

The terraces, fortress and temples at Ollantaymbo is a major Inca complex in the Sacred Valley. Massive terraces rise to a unassailable fortress and temple complex high above the town of Ollantaytambo.
