The architectural styles represented by the extraordinary collection of monuments here include mock Gothic -- the Old Observatory, for example -- and neoclassical. Under the latter category falls the monument William Playfair (1789-1857) designed to honor his talented uncle, the geologist and mathematician John Playfair (1748-1819).

This Classical style monument was designed by the noted architect William Henry Playfair to commemorate Dugald Stewart (1753-1828), one of the great Scottish Enlightenment thinkers. Stewart was Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University and a leading figure in the Scottish school of Common Sense Philosophy along with his teacher at Glasgow University, Thomas Reid, a dominant influence in the formation of Stewart’s ideas.
Stewart wrote "Elements of Philosophy of the Human Mind" as well as biographies of Adam Smith, William Robertson and Thomas Reid.
The monument was built in 1831, and modeled after the Lysicrates Memorial in Athens, Greece. It therefore fits in with other Greek-influenced architecture in the area, such as the National Monument.
