Qasr Al-Hallabat was originally a Roman fort(AD 198-217), a defence against raiding desert tribes. In the 6th century it was renovated and became a Byzantine monastery, but was abandoned during an invasion in the early 7th century. About 100 years later the Umayyads strengthened the fort and caliph Walid II converted it into a pleasure palace.
