The pre-war wooden bathing huts were to the left of the picture. In a secret raid, a German landing party came ashore here after dark and in thick fog on 1st Aug 1940, after the unit had moved to Grigorhill, and took W/O Gaskell's dummy scanning kit by mistake. They escaped without the alarm being raised. The gate they left by is visible in the front wall. (View at FULL SIZE).
picture: Nairn Railway Station, built 1885, almost unchanged since. The RAF Grigorhill bus waited here.

This is where new recruits arrived after a 16-hour overnight train journey from London. The bus journey to Grigorhill only took a few minutes.
