In 1472, twenty years before Columbus left the Old world to look for a sea route to India, thereby discovering America, the Nuremberg clockmaker Hans Düringer created the astronomical clock for St Mary's Church in Rostock. He had considerable experience, having constructed a similar clock in St. Mary's Church in Danzig two years previously. Most of the main clockwork still comprises original parts from that period. It is wound up daily by hand, as are the other works (calendar works, chimes, procession of apostles and hour bell). In 1642, during the Thirty Year' War, the clock was altered and enlarged. The chimes and procession of apostles were added, as was the fine Renaissance case. Below the "procession of apostles" we see the large 24-hour dial of the clock. At 12 o'clock noon the hand of the large indicator points upwards, while at midnight it points downwards. Thus, the upper half of the dial corresponds with the hours of the day, and the lower half with the hours of the night.
