MONFORT CRUSADERS FORTRESS AND PARK

Monfort - was called SHTARKENBERG too - as this fortress l was build by the Teutonic German Knights. The ruins of this castel are at the upper Galilee regionin the northen Israel, 35 k"m northeast to Hifa and 16 K''m south of the border with Lebanon.

The name of the fortrees derives from the two French words MONT/mountain and FORT/strong, meaning the "strong montain". When the fortress was sold from French De Milly family to the Germans Teutonoc Knights, the fortress was called STARKENBERG.

The MONFORT is an archaeological site of the Middle ages , consisting of the ruins of a fortress built by Crusaders during the times of the kingdom of Jerusalem. The fortress is built on a narrow and steep cliff above the southern bank of Keziv stream in the upper Galilee region.
