Back in the very early 1970's I was bitten by a Redback Spider while playing on the clothes line in our back yard. Since then I have been afraid of all Spiders, however a wise man once said, "Embraceing what scares us the most will set us free." I love sp

picture: Redback Spider
published by: barramundiman
The Redback is in the Latrodectus hasseltii Species: Previous species name was Latrodectus mactans hasselti. They are part of the Theridiidae Family. Redback spiders build tangled webs under ledges and in garden shrubs; the webs are untidy arrangements of tight threads with no obvious pattern and are usually close to the ground and in contact with it; most of the time the females are in a retreat of dead leaves bound with silk and there are several round egg sacs nearby. They are very toxic and can cause death or serious illness, especially in young children and frail adults. The immature spiders vary in colour according to how recently they have moulted. Males are very small and are rarely noticed. Their body lengths are, female: 12 mm and male: 3 mm.
