This would be a nice feature if it were serene and used with nature videos... but I fear it will be mostly a college gone wild type of thing

I could not make this work. I uploaded using the desktop software "PictureSync" and what I got was only an image of the first frame of the movie. The info about the image referred to it as a picture and a note said that it was "from a video clip." I tried uploading without the desktop software and my computer processed for a long time without any progress or sign that it was actually uploading. Clicking on the "Upload"button on the webshots homepage does not offer any info on uploading a video as opposed to a picture so I assume that one does it the same way, but obviously it didn't work. Why is there no instruction on how to do this, and nothing mentioned in the help section either? Are there size limits? My video is about 4 minutes which I thought would be ok because the email sent to me announcing video capability says something about keeping it under 5 mins., but of course there are more factors than time affecting file size. Help please.

feltooth 2006.11.16 at 18:51:50 PST
Is there possibly a mac/pc divide in compatability? I used the mac desktop software. It worked terribly, functioned inconsistently, and no video actually got uploaded, just the first frame.

Great news but you can't compare with YouTube : 1. YouTube allows 10 minutes, Webshots only 5 2. YouTube videos looks great in my Athlon 1.4 GHz, Webshots videos takes an eternity to load and play with hiccups. They only play fine on my P4 2.4 GHz 3. No desktop software with YouTube, but the desktop app from Webshot doesn't work with videos either !! I think I'll keep posting my pics in Webshots and my videos in YouTube, until WS solves this problems. Christian.

2 things: 1) The method of sharing you demonstrated is not unique to videos. This would have been a more productive use of your time had you demonstrated how to place videos. 2)(most important) Kindly do not show that commercial on the end anywhere ever again. That model is truly frightening. I am not against advertising, just that particular one.

Videos can take FOREVER to load even with cable internet, some never load completely, some end suddenly even when it says there is more time left. Many of the ones that do actually load are choppy.

Excellent feature! I really like it. BUT...I'd LOVE it if it made the videos watchable. I have the skipping and inconsistency issues too. And for a video taken on an older camera, a smaller picture was produced. To fit the default size that you offer makes the images wonky. You can look at my video collection for examples of these two problems. The technology is only worked out to about 50% but I'd love you to keep working on it! Kaki

I have to agree with most of the people on this thread, the video didn't really tell you how to do much, however, there really isn't much to uploading a video, just go to your "upload" tab and upload whatever you want, same as uploading photos. I have to say though, I am disappointed in the quality of the video clips; hopefully this will improve as Webshots becomes more updated in this field. Thanks Webshots!

Instructional? I think not! This was a promotional video which essential told me what I already knew. If I needed help figuring out how to do what this short clip told me I would not have gotten this far. So, fluff piece aside, I tried to upload and it did not work. These things take time, so I will continue to work at it. Meanwhile, it would have been useful in this video to know things like, should the video be uploaded full sized, or should it be reduced in dimension? Apple has an edit feature for videos which can make the product "web-ready". Is that best? Or just upload straight from the camera? Or DL from camera and then upload the resulting file to Webshots? A genuine help file would be really really really nice. ;-) When you promice someone "beef" they usually think beyond "quarter-pounder with cheese." - Phil

YouTube videos look so much better than Webshots after upload. The quality here is just not there. Tip for some of you..Try using Divx software to convert your files into a .divx file. Then you can upload them faster and convert most files that are not compatible with Webshots as they are. Hope this helps. You can find them at Divx.com. Their software converts almost any file and compresses. To delete the video and not all the others, do a Full Album view, then click on the little x in the corner of the thumbnail view of the movie.

One more thing that might help is to download the trial version of Adobe Vegas Movie Maker and pull your file in from a file or a camera disc, then output it as a .avi. That works well. You will find the trial version at Sony.com, and it has a 30 day trial. I cannot LIVE without this software!

Great idea, sounds simple enough, but does not work? I have uploaded a .wmv file, and after uploading has finished, I get the error message : 'sorry, we do not support that format'. Since the .wmv format is actually in the list of supported file formats on the upload-page, I wonder what the problem is. Any suggestions? Mario Spee Netherlands
said
rainman 10 months 15 days ago
I agree with everyone that the tutorial was of no help. It didn't mention accepted file formats which is the most important point we need to know before trying to upload. I also had the same experience as rainman. I uploaded a video in .wmv format...which took a long time even with my DSL and when it seemed to be finally ready to play I received the error message that the file was not supported, despite that .wmv is listed as an accepted format. As a long time Webshots member I have to say that trying to find a HELP section anywhere on the site has always been very frustrating. I also have a video that needs deleting. Nowhere can one find out how to do that. We need more easy-to-find HELP pages....please! And put the link up in the toolbar ...in large letters...at the top of the page where we can find it. Thanks. sharose105

Why not show the video at its best quality with the default size of 320 by 240 and then have an enlarge button / shrink button. Blowing everything up looks like crap - even the commercials look bad. At least youtube allows you to shrink the video. This site would look better and more professional with smaller and sharper videos. Trust me - Blair witch looked better on the small screen.

Is there a time limit or size limit on videos for uploading? My video gets about 3/4 loaded then I get an error. Thanks for any help.

Is there a way to copy these images into actual pictures instead of streaming video? I would like to make actual albums of our trips and I can't figure out how to do that on this site even though it seems as if you can buy prints. Any advise?

Not very instructive !! We need REAL answers, not some lame 'ad'. Like how big/long can a video be ? What about upload problems ?? Come on !

I thought that this video would give me some insight on how to share a video with my friends and family but it does not. All it does is show that you can share a video with others and it takes you about 30 seconds. This is not an instructional video at all. DISAPPOINTED !!!!!!

There is a certain, ubiquitous, persistent advertiser (spammer is more like it) who completely ruins the user experience with their spammy, pulsating, extremely annoying red (or purple) and blue ads simulating a Windows 98 dialog box and claiming "It's no joke! You are the 10,000 visitor!" The same scumbag used to run ads claiming we were the 1,000,000th visitor. No joke. I am sure you've seen these ads yourselves. They seem to have infested the entire internet! This particular scumbag seems to target websites, such as yours, that make it extremely difficult or impossible to be contacted by their visitors, so that a concerned visitor cannot alert the webmaster. I am willing to wager you are not even aware of this spammer's tactics, but trust you understand he is destroying your franchise and you'll take the necessary steps for these abominable ads to never appear on your pages ever again. As for me, I will refrain from visiting your pages for a month or so, to give my eyes a break and also to let you have the chance to get rid of the spammer once and for all. Thank you.

I appriciate your video Thom.. and I understand how to upload the videos.. But where is the requirements like How big a video can be.. I'm sure not gonna waste my time uploading a video thats 15 seconds Just not worth the effort nor am I going shred a video just to get a story line going cause I'm only aloud so many kb or mb, you know what I mean.. So exactly how big can a video be? Want to please explain the basics so we can all use this without spending 2 1/2 hours uploading one just so you get a message at the end that say Ohh This is to BIG .. Yes I admit i'm a bit irritated... And if this video that you did was a 00:01:14 exactly how many mb is that? My Video was 4 mintues long and 315 or 327 mg .. I have many other videos i would like to post for my family to see but I'm not gonna waste my time if its gonna be rejected at the end of the process.. I have an idea... How about pre approving the size of the upload before its started that way we know. Another suggestion would be to make it easier to find the requirements if they already exist.. you know like on the page you are getting to ready upload the video on.. Not all of us can find that perverbial needle in that haystack even if the needle is as big as a house. Now please tell me that this wasn't a waste of my time cause you neglected to let us know how many characters we could use in our comments and rantings.

I've tried 4 times to upload one of the "accepted" file formats "AVI" that was only 21seconds long but 13MB.. High quality due to original being 30fps.. Lame demo by the way Tom. No informational value what so ever, such as SIZE LIMITS of files or other pertinent information. (I'm tired of "error in file" messages without telling me what the frikin error is). Yes, I'm peeved due to a lot of wasted time.. can you tell??? I might use Webshots for pictures but I'll stick with YOUTUBE for videos.. At least they have their requirements posted!!!!!.. you might follow their example and get a better following of people posting videos! I'm just one of many I can tell by reading the above posts. I'd like to include my videos with my pictures as the 'instructional video' (I use the term loosely) suggests you can do. To this date, I see very few successes in doing so! Regards pcbman1 Sorry to rant on this but it has really wasted my time and I havn't had my coffee yet this morning!

I've been leaving large (10 - 50 MB) AVI videos for months and all the sudden I'm no longer able to upload a simple 14MB video. I've been a premium member for 3 years, if this isn't corrected in the next couple days I will be a former premium member of 3 years. Clocks started - email me when correct... Many good alternatives right now!
